Phahonyothin Road and the Ari lanes

Ari sits in Phaya Thai district, north of the city centre, along Phahonyothin Road and the BTS Sukhumvit Line. BTS Ari is the stop everyone uses. Soi Ari, also known as Phahonyothin Soi 7, leads away from the station into a web of smaller lanes, and the Ari Samphan lanes stretch west towards Rama 6 Road.

It looks nothing like Sukhumvit. Old detached houses with gardens stand next to low-rise apartment blocks, a handful of newer condo towers cluster near the BTS, and government offices line the main road. Many of the houses have turned into cafés, bakeries and small restaurants, so the lanes are busy on weekend mornings and calm almost everywhere else.

Victory Monument and Phaya Thai, a few stops south

South of Ari, past BTS Sanam Pao, the trains reach Victory Monument, one of the busiest transport hubs in the city. Buses and minivans circle the roundabout all day, and the streets around it, Ratchawithi Road, Phaya Thai Road and Soi Rangnam, hold hotels, serviced apartments and guesthouses for travellers who want a central base away from Sukhumvit.

One more stop down, Phaya Thai station is where the Airport Rail Link ends. Plenty of visitors ride it in from the airport, check in nearby and want to rest before doing anything else. A massage after the flight, in the room, is the gentle way to do that.
