Siam is the one station where both BTS lines cross, on Rama I Road in Pathum Wan district. One stop west, National Stadium stands at the corner of Rama I and Phaya Thai Road. One stop north, Ratchathewi station opens onto Phetchaburi Road, and Phaya Thai station follows, where the Airport Rail Link ends its run from the airport.

Pratunam lies north-east of Siam, across the Saen Saep canal in Ratchathewi district, around the busy junction of Phetchaburi Road and Ratchaprarop Road. Its wholesale clothing market fills the lanes from early morning, one of the tallest towers in the city looks down over it, and dozens of mid-range hotels sit in between. Canal boats stop at Pratunam pier, and Chit Lom station is about ten minutes away on foot.

After a shopping day in Siam

Visitors here measure the day in steps. Hours inside air-conditioned centres, the heat on the walkways between them, then bags carried back to the hotel. Pratunam starts even earlier, with wholesale buyers and families from abroad bargaining in the narrow lanes before the sun is high.

By the time the shopping is done, it is the feet, the calves and the lower back that hurt. That makes a foot massage or a 90-minute Thai massage in the room the natural choice, often before dinner, sometimes for the whole group at once.
