What a Traditional Thai Massage Feels Like

Thai massage is the country's own style, and it works differently from the oil massage most visitors know from home. No oil is used and you stay dressed. Your therapist presses along the body with her palms and thumbs in a slow, steady rhythm, then moves your arms and legs through long stretches while you breathe out and let go.

She starts at the feet and works upward: calves, thighs and hips, then the back, the shoulders, the arms and the neck, often ending with the head and the face. The pressure is firm but never sharp. If a stretch feels like too much, say so, or simply tense a little, and she eases off at once.

Many people come out of their first Thai massage feeling taller and looser, as if someone had untangled the whole back. If it is your first one, our first Thai massage tips explain what to expect, minute by minute.

What to Wear, and Where It Happens

Wear something soft that lets you bend and twist: a T-shirt with shorts or light trousers, or simply your pyjamas. Jeans, belts and stiff fabric get in the way of the stretches.

Most Thai massages in a hotel room or condo happen on the bed. If you prefer a firmer surface, fold the spare duvet on the floor and she will work there instead, the way it is done in a traditional Thai shop. Clear a little space on both sides so she can move around you, and keep a towel within reach.

Thai Massage or Oil: Which One Tonight?

Still unsure? Our guide to Thai or oil massage sets the two side by side, and you can always ask in the chat before you book.

  • Choose Thai if your back is stiff, your hips feel tight or you sat for hours on a plane or in meetings.
  • Choose Thai if you like to feel worked on: firm pressure, stretching, a body that feels lighter afterwards.
  • Choose an oil massage if you mostly want to unwind, drift off and sleep straight after.
  • Ask for extra firm pressure if you want a session close to deep tissue, focused on a few knots.

Where We Bring a Thai Massage

We come to hotels, condos, serviced apartments and Airbnbs across central Bangkok, up to roughly 7 km from Nana and Asok: Sukhumvit from Nana to On Nut, Siam and Pratunam, Ploenchit and Chidlom, Silom, Sathorn and Lumphini, the riverside and Chinatown, and Rama 9, Ratchada and Ari further north. Transport is included in central areas.

Traditional Thai is the lightest-priced massage on our menu, and every length has a fixed price, shown below and on our Bangkok massage price list. The figure we confirm in the chat is the figure you pay.

Questions

Can I get a Thai massage in my hotel room in Bangkok?

Yes. A therapist comes to your hotel room, condo or Airbnb in central Bangkok, usually about 30 minutes after you book, at any hour.

Is oil used in a traditional Thai massage?

No. A traditional Thai massage is given without oil, and you stay dressed in loose, comfortable clothes the whole time.

Does Thai massage hurt?

It should feel firm, never painful. Tell her if a stretch or a point is too strong and she eases off straight away.

What should I wear for a Thai massage at my hotel?

Something soft and loose, like a T-shirt with shorts or light trousers, or pyjamas. Avoid jeans and belts.

How long should a Thai massage be?

60 minutes covers the whole body. 90 or 120 minutes leaves time for longer stretches and extra work on the back, hips or legs.

Is there a Thai massage near me open late in Bangkok?

Yes. We take bookings 24 hours a day, and a therapist travels to wherever you are staying in central Bangkok.
